Challenge

The scale of digital innovations in Africa is frequently hindered by the lack of favorable conditions for developing and refining these innovations, as well as expanding their market reach. This issue is particularly pronounced in the realm of digital agricultural innovations. AgTech start-ups encounter various challenges that directly impact their profitability and growth potential.

Theses include:

  • Limited access to data for product development
  • High costs and limited availability of customer acquisition
  • Lack of strong networks and partnerships in the agricultural sector
  • Financial burden affecting profitability
  • Difficulty in broadening customer base and entering new markets

Effectively addressing these challenges requires innovative and collaborative approaches to support the success of Agritech start-ups in Africa.

Approach

The GreenAPI program is a joint initiative designed by Make-IT in Africa and Orange (Sonatel Senegal) that aims to maximize impact on climate smart agriculture and the livelihood of smallholder farmers in Africa.

Make-IT in Africa and Orange have recognized Digital Agricultural Platforms (DAP) as mechanism to bundle smart agricultural products and services creating a one-stop shop for smallholder farmers with a higher potential to scale.

The program will empower up to 15 selected start-ups to integrate their products and services with a DAP by providing them with all the skills required to plan and implement the integration. For up to 3 of these startups there will be a chance to partner with a the DAP, providing them with a unique opportunity to design and pilot a joint service offering with a long-term viable business partnership as a result.

Goal

GreenAPI-smart Agriculture program aims to facilitate business partnerships between DAPs and Smart Agriculture startups and improve agricultural practices in Africa by creating wider and better access to smart agriculture services for smallholder farmers, companies and other value chain actors.
